2006 Kneeboarding Championships are most hotly contested yet
|
NEWQUAY’S Fistral beach was buzzing on Saturday (October 21st) when it played host to the 2006 British Kneeboarding Championships. Sponsored by Thule, the world’s largest manufacturer of car roof systems, accessories and roof boxes, this year’s competition was one of the most hotly contested in the event’s history. The unpredictable surf, coupled with an extremely high standard of entrants meant for a thrilling battle for the top titles.
The men’s AAA final was a real nail biter, with last year’s winner, Richard Smith battling out with Chris Diplock, Karl Ward and Richard Hewitt to retain his title. The competition was very closely fought and after some very high scoring waves Karl and Richard Smith were tied in first place. It was contest director Karen Walton’s count back that made the final decision to name Richard as the champion for the second year running.
The AA final was equally exciting with Cliff Squibb, Chris Bull and Nick Barkham performing brilliantly, but even their moves were not quite enough to stop Anthony Armshaw from taking the title.
The ladies final was a one on one clash between Natalie Silverthorn and 2005’s champ, Jody Troth. The surf had reached its peak by the time the two women had their turn out on the water and the conditions proved a bit too much for Jody who lost out to Natalie.
Presenting the winners with their trophies and prizes, which included Thule Wave Surf carriers, Thule’s marketing manager Peter Barker said: “Each year the contest provides a great opportunity to showcase the sport of kneeboarding on one of Cornwall’s most spectator friendly beaches, and this year was no exception. The competition showed that there is very high standard of kneeboard surfing in the UK, with some great competitors who have real potential on an international scale. Thule is very proud to be sponsoring such an exciting sport that is growing in popularity every year.”
