Thule Sponsor Daring Sea North Sea Kayak Expedition
|
Thule, the world’s largest manufacturers of car roof rack systems, boxes and accessories have joined forces with SEAT to sponsor a daring North Sea kayaking record attempt by former Olympian Patrick Winterton, 46, and colleague Mick Berwick, 51.
The pair of intrepid explorers set off last week for the treacherous crossing between Scotland and the Faroe Islands. Their aim is to recreate the final part of the legendary religious quest undertaken by sixth-century monk St. Bernard; the patron saint of mariners and sailors. The 225 mile journey will take several days and will take the pair from Stornoway to the Isle of Lewis and onto Torshavn, the Faroese Capital.
Winterton commented to journalists: “This is the Mount Everest of British sea kayaking and I’ve reached the stage where I’ve done all the other challenging routes. Now there’s nothing left but to go for the big one.”
Thule have supported Berwick and Winterton by supplying top of the range Hull-a-Port Pro 837 kayak carriers and a full square bar roof system, which will enable them to transport all their equipment safely and securely on the long drive to the expedition’s launch point in Stornoway.

In this courageous record attempt, the pair will paddle overnight with the added danger of their kayak being invisible to radar. Storms, wind and trawlers could also potentially sabotage the crossing and they will need to battle freezing temperatures and sleep deprivation, only catching small amounts of sleep when they can.
The attempt will be filmed for the Discovery Channel, due to be aired in the autumn. |
