Triathletes Triumph at Perranporth
|
On Sunday 21st September, 250 athletes ran, swam and cycled nearly 44km to complete the 21st Perranporth Annual Surf Challenge, sponsored by Thule, the world’s largest manufacturer of car roof rack systems and accessories.
In sunny, warm conditions, the 250 entrants started with a tough 800m surf swim in the relatively calm sea. This was followed by a gruelling 35km hill cycle around Perranporth and 7.5km beach and cliff run. Despite the calm conditions, competitors described the sea and land legs as some of the toughest challenges experienced to date.
Junior Heffernan was first out of the water with 00:19:06. The first woman out of the swim was a Sam Herridge, 2006 Commonwealth Games competitor in a time of 00:20:27.
The hardcore 38 km cycle saw Heffernan still leading. However, Matt Pullen who was third after the swim, moved to second after the cycle leg. Pullen turned up the pace for the final gruelling 7.5km beach run, winning the Men’s title with a time of 01:51:56. Junior Heffernan finished second with 01:52:43, whilst Harry Wiltshire was third in a time of 01:53:01.
The Women’s race saw Sam Herridge finish first in 02:05:46, 12th overall, Helen Parkinson took second place in a time of 02:08:47 and Jessica Taylor third with 02:12:20. Heffernan won the Junior Men’s race, and Natasha Diment won the Junior Girls event. The team event was won by the Cycle Logic team.
