Extra baggage need not add weight to holiday fuel costs
|
Carrying a Thule roof box to your family car allows extra luggage capacity whilst keeping fuel economy low, a test at a top automotive research centre has found.
Thule products tested at the Millbrook research Centre in Bedfordshire dispelled the myth that driving with a roof box significantly harms fuel economy.
The experiment carried out by a leading motoring title showed driving with your air conditioning on can potentially use more fuel than driving with a fully loaded roof box.
Peter Barker, General Manager of Thule, the world’s largest manufacturer of roof boxes and accessories, commented that the findings show their extensive product research and testing builds confidence in the Thule brand:
“The test results mean that families who have downsized their cars for financial or environmental reasons do not have to compromise on comfort when travelling this year. With a Thule roof box you can add litres of extra space to your car when you need to – without worrying about the fuel consumption you would have used with a larger vehicle.”
The Thule Spirit 780 roof box, which was tested at the Millbrook centre on a 2008 Vauxhall Astra CDT Sri, showed fuel economy figures of only 0.2 miles per gallon less than the starting baseline of 30.5 MPG.
“I’m quite surprised, I thought it would be more,” said Anthony Sale, senior powertrain engineer at the Millbrook facility said of the low roof box test results. “I guess it’s because roof box makers attempt to make them as aerodynamic as possible.” Alan Johnson also commented in the roof box’s favour, by noting there was no additional wind noise from the box as he lapped the test track.
